TjekDet

TjekDet aimed to equip young people to navigate constructively and more safely in an information landscape with misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation through a targeted campaign.

In short

Situation

As fake news and misinformation become an increasing societal problem, trust in traditional media is declining. This is becoming a growing issue, especially among young people and their educators, as fake news is not just fake news. There is a difference between false information and why it is shared and spread. TjekDet aimed to equip young people to navigate constructively and more safely in an information landscape with misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation through a targeted campaign.

Solution

In collaboration with project partners TjekDet, Medierådet for Børn og Unge, Enigma – Museum for Post, Tele og Kommunikation, and FALS – Foreningen af Lærere i Samfundsfag, and with support from the Ministry of Culture’s Democracy Fund, Substantia contributed to creating an educational campaign that shed light on the problems – and served as an entry point to a learning universe with videos, podcasts, and teaching materials for children and young people about misinformation, source criticism, and hate speech. The effort, which was nationwide, audiovisual, and action-oriented, aimed to create focus on and knowledge of fake news, as well as provide insight to the target audience on how to master source criticism, increase digital literacy, and provide tools to navigate safely in public debate.

Results

Through the effort, TjekDet effectively focused on and created knowledge of fake news through the campaign, providing tools to the target audience to navigate information and news in a thoughtful way. The materials of “STOP. TÆNK. TJEK DET.” are now used as a basis for teaching, and in addition to conveying important information, the effort has created awareness of a societal problem and positioned TjekDet as the leading Danish fact-checking media.

Description

TjekDet is Denmark’s politically independent fact-checking media that fact-checks, corrects, and nuances claims in the public debate. Combating misinformation and disinformation has been TjekDet’s main focus since the media first saw the light of day in November 2016. As fake news and misinformation become a growing societal problem, trust in traditional media is declining. This is becoming an increasing problem, especially among young people and their teachers, because fake news is not just fake news. There is a difference between false information and why it is shared and spread. TjekDet aimed to equip young people to navigate constructively and more safely in an information landscape with mis-, dis- and malinformation through a targeted campaign.
